After Weight Loss Surgery
What Is After Weight Loss – Skin Removal (Post-Bariatric) Surgery?
Patients who have lost more than 50 kilograms by undergoing bariatric surgery often find they have “deflated” skin in many areas of their body, including the face, arms, breasts, abdomen, and thighs. These patients may need post-bariatric surgery, also known as after weight loss surgery or skin removal surgery. It includes body-contouring procedures to remove the excess skin and fatty tissue that might remain after massive weight loss, helping patients achieve a more natural, aesthetically pleasing shape.
Are You a Suitable Candidate for Post-Bariatric Surgery?
You a suitable candidate for skin removal surgeries if you have reached your goal weight, and your weight has remained stable for at least six months. Improved body contours from skin removal surgery will last for many years, but severe weight fluctuations after surgery will negatively affect the results. You also have to be a healthy individual with realistic goals and without medical conditions, and understand that you may have visible scars after the operation. Post-bariatric skin removal surgery can improve your body image and appearance dramatically, but will not give you the “perfect” body. Also, you should be able to take several weeks off to recover.
How Is the Operation Process of Post-Bariatric Surgery?
Before the operation, all the necessary blood tests and general anesthesia tests should be performed. It is also recommended to examine the patient with the help of an anesthesiologist. Depending on the needs of the patients, the plastic surgeons may perform one or more of the following procedures.
- Lower Body Lift (Circumferential Body Lift): This operation tightens tissues on the abdomen area, thighs, and buttocks. It is one of the most common post-bariatric procedures.
- Upper Body Lift: This surgery targets arms, breasts, and upper back to regain a firmer and younger look.
- Thigh & Buttock Lift: It removes excess fat and skin and restores a smoother, firmer, and slimmer shape to the legs and buttocks.
- Tummy Tuck: For some of the patients that had weight-loss surgeries, only a tummy tuck surgery can be enough to get rid of excess skin on their abdomen area after massive weight loss if this is their only concern.
Skin removal (post-bariatric) surgery procedures are performed under general anesthesia, and the operation time varies between 2 – 5 hours, according to the operation type.
Post-Bariatric Skin Removal Surgery Post Operation Process
Patients’ recovery depends on both the treatments they have and the amount of the skin that is removed. For example, if the patient only receives an upper arm lift or a breast lift, it is possible to get back to work within a week and continue exercising within a month.
More extensive operations, such as lower body lift, may take longer healing time and require a short stay in the hospital. Temporary drainages may be placed for the first 1 to 2 weeks to minimize swelling and discomfort. After lower body lift operations, lifting, intensive exercise, and physical labor are usually off-limits for 6 + weeks.
A more youthful, natural appearance and a significant improvement in comfort and self-confidence that can last a lifetime are the rewards of post-bariatric surgery.
